Representatives Matt Bell and Dan Leonard Focus on Separate, Yet Significant, Issues

The Journal Gazette briefs over the issues that Matt Bell and Dan Leonard are addressing this summer. Representative Bell will concentrate on alcohol sales, while Representative Leonard works to improve adult education.

• Alcoholic beverages – Reps. Matt Bell, R-Avilla, and Phil GiaQuinta, D-Fort Wayne, are among the committee members who will look at issues involving alcohol sales, including the history of the state’s alcoholic beverage laws. Stateline.org reports that lawmakers across the country are examining laws that date back to the repeal of Prohibition. This past week, Colorado became the 35th state to allow residents to buy alcohol on Sundays.

• Adult education – Rep. Dan Leonard, R-Huntington, will serve on a committee studying funding for adult education. The state’s Department of Education now oversees most programs, but there are efforts to move more money to the Department of Workforce Development, where some critics believe rural communities will be overlooked and basic skill programs will be lost in favor of job-training programs.

Dan Leonard to speak to Huntington University Foundation

Fort Wayne Observed reports that Rep. Dan Leonard will be addressing the Huntington University Foundation.

State Rep. Dan Leonard and state Sen. Gary Dillon will discuss the recently completed session of the Indiana General Assembly and the impact it will have on Indiana at the Huntington University Foundation breakfast on April 9.

The breakfast line will open at 7:45 a.m. in Huntington University’s Habecker Dining Commons, and the program will conclude by 9 a.m. The cost is $6 per person.

The Huntington University Foundation hosts a monthly breakfast meeting open to anyone interested in learning about current issues and Huntington University programs. Breakfast meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month, September through May, at the Habecker Dining Commons. Dan Leonard interview

State Representative Dan Leonard recently was interviewed by the Talk of the Town blog up in NE Indiana.

Leonard gave us a brief overview of HB1001, what it means, and how it affects taxpayers. He also explained the “Little Red Schoolhouse” Amendment he authored and how it ended up at the end of the legislative session. The quality isn’t great but we’ll work on that for future interviews.
